Abstract: The article discusses the features of the contemporary time, characterized as a postmodern era, reducing the efficiency of the functioning of representative democracy as a mechanism of the will of the people. These features are impact of multinational corporations, reduction of the period of socio-technological cycles, destruction of national identity, foreign information influence, informational alienation of the individual, mass immigration. It is concluded that during the postmodern era the elections are transformed from the mechanism of popular will to a mechanism of manipulation of public consciousness and a way of legitimizing political power. One of the urgent tasks of political science is the search for the adequate to the epoch of the means of political management, mechanisms of formation of effective state power acting for the common good.
