Abstract: The development of the Internet over the recent decades has become an incentive for radial transformational processes in all spheres including daily communication practices. Authors state the wide spread of online mass self-communication being the result of availability of internet technologies. New forms of communication cause risks which need to be studied in order to minimize their consequences. Basing on the results of student focus groups the authors analyzed online self-communication risks and their occurrence among young people as well as adaptation mechanisms. The results of focus groups allowed the researches to identify five types of risks: risks of Internet addiction, risks of communication quality, risks of changing representation, cybercrime risks and content risks and show main adaptation mechanism and ways of minimization of their negative effects. The major conclusion was that virtual reality is perceived as essential part of students’ everyday life.
Keywords: communication, online self-communication, Internet-related risks, risk management, Internet security, youth, focus groups
